Gothic 1 dead or knocked out11/4/2023 Like the way you pay off guards to protect you. There's a lot of great details in the gameplay and the way it's woven into the world. The character progression is unique in the way it's integrated into the world, but is way too simple compared to RPGs that come after. I spent 5 hours figuring out the game and dying constantly, 2 hours leveling up and getting gear, and then the rest of the game was a cake walk and nothing could touch me. But the transition from nobody to hero happened too quickly. I like the idea of what they're going for, especially little details like leveling up weapon handling literally makes your character swing more skillfully. Combat is *alright* once you get the hang of it, and it's much more about leveling up and getting better gear than any skillful play or counter to enemies. I got used to them after awhile, but I'm baffled as to why it was done this way, it feels like one of those instances where the designers had never played a video game before (ala Shenmue). The initial story elements feel like the game is going to focus on the political factions of the different camps, but slowly devolves into a pretty boring 'save the world from the evil thing summoned by the evil cult'. It has a grounded progression for zero to hero. It starts off with a unique setting and story hook, and together with combat, emphasizes how weak and vulnerable you are. I do hope the other Gothic games are more tolerable.Ī good game for the type of experience it wants to simulate, but not worth finishing. I am glad I managed to finish the game, but I will never, ever, touch the game again. I am a gamer who doesn't like leaving games unfinished, even if I don't enjoy them. I have you know, I actually completed the game. There's a lot of rough touches to admire about it for sure, like how weapon animations change as you get better training, but I still thing it's very rough around the edges and even for an old game I don't think it's good. Secondly, it's a very, very corny adventure in a game with an original setting (prison colony surrounded by a one-way magic barrier) with different factions to join and some different ways to play it. I downloaded mods that made the game bearable to say the least, but it was still very annoying. It would seem Steam sells this game broken and I have read that it works better on other platforms. I managed to run it, which is more than most, but the game still kept crashing quite often. Firstly there was a lot of problems to get the game to work for me to even play it. This was my first time playing the game, and before this I had never heard of the games. I would say that the game is good considering when it came out, but sadly I was not having a good time with it. 58h 24m PlayedThey say Gothic is the series that laid foundation to many series today and they praise it to heavens.
